Avnet Embedded announces SMARC 2.1™ modules featuring Intel’s Atom® x6000E series for increasing edge computing performance
With the MSC SM2S-EL module family, Avnet Embedded is expanding its already extensive range of SMARC 2.1™ standard modules in the upper performance segment. The MSC SM2S-EL modules integrate the new multi-core Intel Atom® x6000E and Intel Atom® Pentium® / Celeron® N und J Series processor technology (codenamed „Elkhart Lake”). Built on energy-efficient 10nm process technology, the processors offer a significant increase in CPU and graphics performance with the same number of cores and similar power dissipation.
The powerful MSC SM2S-EL SMARC 2.1™ module family is designed for applications that demand high computing power on a small form factor with optimized costs. The new boards are suited for innovative solutions based on artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning functions, intelligent HMI and control systems, Industrial IoT (IIoT) based systems, professional camera solutions, mobile medical devices and smart home products.
Most of the MSC SM2S-EL module variants are specified for the industrial temperature range of -40°C to +85°C and reliable 24/7 continuous operation even under harsh industrial conditions or in outdoor installations. The compact boards are available for at least 15 years from now.
For demanding network applications, the SMARC 2.1™ boards offer high real-time functions and two Gigabit Ethernet ports with Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) and Intel® Time Coordinated Computing (Intel® TCC) support and two CAN-FD interfaces.
With availability of the first MSC SM2S-EL module family, Avnet Embedded is offering early access to the new processor technology at the same time as the introduction of the multi-core Intel Atom® x6000E Series generation. Based on the appropriate SMARC 2.1™ development platform and a ready-to-run starter kit, design of new end products can begin immediately.
Avnet Embedded has incorporated the new Intel Atom® generation into all four established embedded standards SMARC 2.1™, Qseven 2.1™, COM Express™ Type 6 and Type 10 and offers an adequate module solution for all applications. Like all embedded modules, Avnet Embedded’s new embedded modules are developed in its own Technology Campuses and manufactured in highly automated production facilities.
Technical specifications:
The MSC SM2S-EL SMARC 2.1™ module family integrates the recently announced Intel® Atom® processor generation based on a new Intel® Atom® Core architecture and an advanced 10 nm process technology. The boards can be equipped with various quad-core and dual-core Intel® Atom® x6xxxRE (Real-Time Embedded SKUs), Intel® Atom® x6xxxE (Embedded SKUs), quad-core Intel® Pentium® / Celeron® J64xx or dual / quad-core Intel® Pentium® / Celeron® N6xxx processor variants. Depending on processor type, the thermal design power (TDP) is between 6W and 12W.
The compact, cost-optimized MSC SM2S-EL modules in the SMARC 2.1™ Short Size form factor (82 x 50mm) feature a fast LPDDR4 memory with a capacity of up to 16GB and configurable in-band ECC functionality. Optionally, up to 256GB UFS 2.0 Flash are supported on-board. The modules can be equipped with an Infineon Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0.
The MSC SM2S-EL module family offers two Gigabit Ethernet interfaces with Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) and Intel® Time Coordinated Computing (Intel® TCC) support, two CAN-FD interfaces, up to four PCIe Gen 3 lanes and two USB 3.1 ports. Mass storage devices can be connected via a SATA 6Gb/s channel.
The MSC SM2S-EL SMARC 2.1™ module family can drive up to three independent displays with a maximum of 4k resolution and supports DirectX 12, OpenGL 4.5, OpenCL 1.2 and Vulkan v1.1.
