Avnet Embedded and Renesas cooperate in the field of SMARC modules and present first energy- and cost-efficient module family based on RZ/G2UL processors
Stutensee, Germany – November, 2022 – In order to open up new markets and applications for scalable standard modules, Avnet Embedded, the leading manufacturer of embedded solutions, has extended the existing partnership of the Avnet Group with Renesas, a globally established processor manufacturer, to include compact SMARC modules. Avnet Embedded’s objective is to further expand its already extensive portfolio of high-performance embedded module families into a new price/performance class. The first result of this cooperation is Avnet Embedded’s energy-efficient MSC SM2S-G2UL SMARC 2.1.1™ module family, which is based on Renesas RZ/G2UL ARM® Cortex™-A55 processors.
Dr. Dominik Ressing, VP Avnet Embedded, says: “The new SMARC module built on technology from Renesas demonstrates our commitment to giving our customers the best possible options for embedding computing in their products. Renesas’ RZ/G2UL processors are popular for designs focused on cost and energy efficiency, and this processor series in a modular platform will unlock huge new potential for engineers and product designers.”

The compact MSC SM2S-G2UL SMARC 2.1.1™ module family is in the lower performance and price segment, and opens up numerous new areas of application. Typical applications are industrial, IoT and AI, medical, transportation, power engineering, and building automation products. The scalable boards with dimensions of 82 x 50mm are specified for the extended temperature range from -40 to +85°C.
Avnet Embedded develops its SMARC module families in its company-owned design centers who have built up a comprehensive embedded know-how. The modules are manufactured in large quantities in highly automated production facilities in Germany.
Technical specifications:
Avnet Embedded’s power-efficient and cost-effective MSC SM2S-G2UL SMARC 2.1.1 module family is equipped with Renesas RZ/G2UL ARM Cortex-A55 processors integrating a single-core ARM Cortex-A55 processor running at 1.0 GHz, an ARM Cortex-M33 real-time processor and an image processing unit to support entry level HMI applications. The typical design power ranges from 3 to 4W.
The MSC SM2S-G2UL modules offer cost-effective DDR4 memory technology, combined with up to 256GB eMMC Flash memory. Various interfaces for embedded applications such
as Gigabit Ethernet, USB 2.0, dual CAN-FD, dual-channel LVDS and MIPI CSI-2 for connecting a camera are available. An on-board wireless module is provided as
assembly options.
For quick evaluation and simple design-in of the embedded modules, Avnet Embedded provides a complete development platform and a starter kit. Support for Linux operating system is available, Android support is on request.
